Fixed-Point Observation Project

oto archive

The pulse of the city, the ring of a temple bell, whispers from the alleyways — a field recording archive preserving Japan's soundscapes for the future.

CONCEPT

Recording fading sounds and enduring sounds

The vanishing pulse of the city, and the cultural sounds passed down for centuries — through the contrast of these two axes, we document Japan's soundscapes. The irreversibility of time itself becomes the value of the work.

"Many of the Tokyo sounds I recorded in 1988 no longer exist. Even the sound of pachinko parlors is completely different now."

— Carl Stone, Sound Artist

The sounds of Nakamise-dori in 2026 cannot be recorded in 2030. Yet the bell of Chion-in will ring for another century. 'Why does this sound fade?' 'Why does this sound endure?' — that question is at the heart of this archive.
